Audiology

What is Audiology?

How many of our moments are punctuated by and populated with sounds? Applause. Songs. Laughter. In a world with so many sounds, it’s easy to take our hearing for granted. However, when a warning sign tells us that we may be dealing with hearing loss, our attention turns to finding a solution. Audiologists diagnose, test, treat and manage hearing loss and other issues related to auditory response.

An audiologist is a licensed hearing healthcare professional who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss and balance disorders in adults and children. Audiologists are autonomous professionals and may be found practicing in hospitals, clinics, private practices, ENT offices, schools, government or military settings, and VA hospitals. If you or a family member suspects you have a hearing or balance problem, contact an audiologist. After carefully reviewing your health history and evaluating your hearing, an audiologist will determine whether your condition might be medically treatable and will refer you to an appropriate professional. If your condition is not medically treatable, he or she will review any recommendations for audiological care or treatment which may include hearing aids, aural rehabilitation or balance therapy. Most hearing loss that is not medically treatable can be corrected by the use of hearing aids and assistive listening devices; audiologists can prescribe and fit these devices.
