Orthopaedics

What Is an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

We believe orthopaedics is about more than bones and joints. It's about your quality of life. Orthopaedics is the branch of medicine dealing with the correction of abnormalities of bones or muscles. The musculoskeletal system includes bones, ligaments, joints and tendons within the human body, as well as the muscles and nerves. Practicing proper exercise techniques and maintaining a balanced diet and healthy weight can help to reduce the risk of suffering from future orthopaedic conditions or pain.

An orthopaedic surgeon is a doctor who is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or injuries of the musculoskeletal system, like the spine or joints.  After graduation, physicians must complete a 5-year residency program. Residency program requirements usually include 4 years of orthopaedic surgery training and 1 year of training in general surgery, pediatrics, or internal medicine. Standard procedures that orthopaedic surgeons perform are hip, shoulder, knee and ankle replacement surgeries, as well as back surgery. There are many branches of orthopaedics, allowing doctors to choose a specialty.
